CYCLADES! A well-known name. For those that love antiquity, it is not only the birthplace of Gods but also, the birthplace of one of the most important civilizations worldwide – the Cycladic civilization.
Cape Sounion is the southernmost tip of the Attica region. There you can see the amazing, unfinished, temple of god Poseidon, the temple of goddess Athena. And don’t forget to watch the beautiful sunset.
Kythnos, is named after the mythological King, Kythnos. The island is also called “Thermia” (hot springs) due to the many thermal springs and in Prehistoric times it was called “Ofioussa” meaning land of snakes for obvious reason.
Sifnos is approx. 140 km from Athens, and is named after the ancient Attic hero Sifnos. The first traces of human activity are from the proto Greek period, as a double wall around an Acropolis of that period was found on the island.
The homeland of Afrodite of Milos (now in the Louvre museum). Milos is 155 km from Athens (84 nautical miles). The name of the island comes from the ancient Greek word vilos meaning sheep. There are human traces from the Prehistoric period on the island.
The island of the Cyclopes, according to mythology, is 120 km from Athens. The birthplace of Perseus has since antiquity the same name, which means “cistern”.
The closest to Attica, approx. 40 miles, island of the Cyclades, is named after the ancient hero Ceos, son of Apollo. Its first name was Hydroussa and during the occupation by the Franks, the island was named Tzia, the name that is also used today along with Kea. Kea is facing Lavrio and is between Makronisos or Island of Helen and Kithnos.
